PIEMONTE ITALY

Piemonte Italy > Cuneo > Cortemilia

Cortemilia is situated in the heart of the Upper Langhe and is the capital of one of the most famous type of hazelnut, the Tonda Gentile di Langa, which has been awarded the prestigious I.G.P. title. The Palazzo Rabino was founded here in May 2000 to promote the hazelnut and maintain the traditions of the Cortemilia area.

The town has several noted festivals one of which is held in the last week of August where Cortemilia celebrates its most famous product with its Sagra Della Nocciola (Hazelnut Fair). Over the last weekend of August the town celebrates Profumi Di Nocciola which is a festival of hazelnut deserts and wines of the Langa arranged together Arcigola Slow Food.

In September Cortemilia hosts an event for talented young people who animate the international "Premio Vittoria Caffa Righetti" music competition, one of the most prestigious events of its kind in Italy.

The town is host to several architectural delights including the Pieve di Santa Maria, a charming parish church clad in traditional Langhe stone.

Cortemilia is divided into two parts, the old displaying its distant past in the form of Romanesque-style columns and arches and a new part with a fine selection of shops, restaurants, banks and bars.

The surrounding area finds several small villages that truly represent the traditional Langhe life style with many old rustic stone houses some of which have been left to ruin and others that have been restored to their former glory.

Cortemilia has a population of approximately 2591 and is situated 250 above sea level.
